Encourage the highest level of professionalism, accountability, and technical excellence in the provision of medical technology and biomedical engineering services for the benefit of people in Malawi.
To stimulate indigenous research and development focused on sustainable, cost-effective medical technologies that solve local clinical challenges
To cultivate a vibrant professional network that contributes to national policy discussions and expands the collective intelligence of the biomedical field.
To provide a comprehensive framework for certification, specialized training, and mentorship, ensuring Malawian engineers remain competitive globally.
To bridge the gap between academia, industry, and government, creating a robust pipeline for knowledge exchange and resource sharing.
Registered on March 19th, 2023, the Association of Biomedical Engineering in Malawi (ABEM) is the premier professional body dedicated to the advancement of medical technology and engineering excellence in the "Warm Heart of Africa."
We represent a diverse community of engineers, medical physicists, technicians, researchers, and students who bridge the gap between engineering innovation and life-saving medical care. In a healthcare system where technology is rapidly evolving, ABEM serves as the vital link ensuring that medical equipment is safe, effective, and sustainable.

The Custodian of Excellence and Professional Integrity
The EPSC ensures that Biomedical Engineering in Malawi is practiced with the highest level of integrity. This committee is responsible for maintaining the ABEM Code of Ethics and defining the Professional Scope of Practice for our members. By setting high standards for professional etiquette and workplace conduct, the EPSC protects the reputation of our profession and ensures the safety of the patients we serve.
Key Focus: Ethical guidelines, professional standards, and membership credentialing.

The Engine of Innovation
The IRIDC promotes research, innovation, and industry collaboration within the biomedical engineering field. This committee facilitates research partnerships, supports commercialization of innovations, and nurtures local manufacturing of medical technologies. By bridging academia and industry, the IRIDC ensures members stay at the forefront of technical advancement and intellectual property protection.
Key Focus: Research facilitation, innovation support, industry partnerships, and technology commercialization.

The Voice and Influence of the Profession
The MPAC is responsible for telling the ABEM story and ensuring our voice is heard where it matters most. This committee manages our public image, social media, and technical publications. Crucially, the MPAC leads our Policy Advocacy efforts, engaging with government bodies and health regulators to champion the role of Biomedical Engineers in achieving national health goals.
Key Focus: Public relations, policy lobbying, newsletters, and event promotion.

The Builders of Knowledge and Community
The ECBMC empowers members through training, mentorship, and professional development across all stages of their careers. It drives Continuing Professional Development (CPD), student engagement, regional chapter growth, and membership recruitment. By connecting and supporting members, the ECBMC strengthens ABEM’s professional community and fosters the next generation of biomedical engineers.
Key Focus: CPD programs, mentorship, membership growth, and regional engagement.

Empowering Women in Biomedical Engineering
The ABEM Ladies Chapter provides a dedicated platform for women biomedical engineers to connect, lead, and thrive. It promotes gender inclusion, mentorship, professional growth, and leadership development within the profession. The Chapter organizes networking forums, technical discussions, outreach initiatives, and mentorship programs that support women at every stage of their careers — from students to senior professionals. Through advocacy and collaboration, the Ladies Chapter works to increase female representation and influence in healthcare technology and engineering leadership across Malawi.
Key Focus: Women’s leadership, mentorship, professional growth, and gender inclusion in biomedical engineering.

Shaping the Next Generation of Biomedical Engineers
The ABEM Student Society serves as the bridge between academic training and professional practice. It brings together biomedical engineering students across institutions to foster peer learning, innovation, and early professional exposure. The Society organizes technical workshops, career talks, research showcases, and mentorship engagements with practicing engineers. It also provides leadership opportunities that prepare students for active participation in ABEM and the broader healthcare technology sector.
Key Focus: Student engagement, technical exposure, mentorship, and leadership development
